What We Do
The PTO sponsors many
things throughout the year. Here is a sampling of the
projects/events that we do. PTO Meetings: The first Tuesday
evening of each month, the PTO meets to go over the PTO
business. The PTO provides child care for parents that need
to bring their children with them.
Assemblies:
The PTO covers the expense on
many of the assemblies that come to Custer. Example:
Pacific
Science Van Carnival: The school's
carnival is held in
the spring and is a fun event for not only the students and
their family but for the whole community.
Curriculum
Nights: These nights
usually take place right after the new school year begins.
These nights are for parents to learn what the teachers are
doing in the classrooms with their children. The PTO
provides child care for parents that need to bring their
children with them.
Discretionary
Teachers Fund: At the
end of each PTO year the Teachers give the PTO a
prioritized "Wish List." From this list the PTO
appropriates funds that will grant the teachers as much as
possible so they can improve the Custer School teaching
environment.
Family
Fun Night(s): The PTO
hosts these Family Fun Nights throughout the year. This
year the PTO has plans for a Skating Night, Swimming Night
and Movie Night. The cost for Custer students is free and
the cost for other family members is minimal. The PTO
members are the people who decide when, what and where we
hold these Family Fun Nights. Field Trips: Each grade level
receives an amount from the PTO to use for field trip
expenses.
Geography
Passport: The PTO
funds this educational fun event that the children learn in
class. The children will bring home a map of the world and
each month they will learn where to find places on the map.
Holiday
Store: The PTO has
each year a Holiday Store. This store is where the student
may purchase items to give to parents, grandparents and
siblings. All items are low in cost and fun for the
children to purchase with their own money and give them as
gifts. The store usually opens the first of December and is
open on a regular basis until winter break.
Scholarships:
As stated on the first page
the PTO offers three scholarships to graduating seniors
from Custer.
School
playgrounds: The PTO
has for the last two years been improving the playing field
behind the school. We hope to soon have a running track
along with a football/soccer field for the children to use.
The PTO has also been updating play equipment that is
located on the grounds on a regular basis.
Survival
Kits: At the end of
the 2002 school year, the PTO voted to supply the funds to
purchase the Survival Kits for the school. By the end of
the 2003 school year, the school had enough Survival Kits
for each classroom as well as each room children would be.
The PTO will need to replace the kits when used and then if
not used replace the perishable items every five years. For
a small amount of $3.00 per child per year, this will not
be a large expense to the PTO in years to come. This
$3/child/year is set-aside in a special fund to cover the
cost of kit replacement.
WASL
& ITBS Testing Days Snacks: In the spring, the WASL and ITBS test
occur at the school. The PTO provides healthy snacks to
help provide the students with the energy to complete these
tests.
PTO
also supports the following: LAP books, Physical Fitness Awards,
Winter Program, and Year Books.
Other
items: Several years
ago the PTO was able to use funds to improve the sound
system in the gymnasium. This sound system is used for all
assemblies, school programs and also for the PE teacher
classes. The PTO has also improved the Baseball
field.
